The Garden of Time (O Jardim do Tempo) - Interactive Video Installation

The Garden of Time is an interactive video installation by VOID (Carlos Sena Caires and Jorge Cardoso) and it's part of the colective exhibition The Garden of Ts'ui Pên (O Jardim de Ts'ui Pên) at the School of Arts in Porto. This work is based on "The Garden of Forking Paths", a short story by Jorge Luís Borges and it tries to mimic that garden by telling a story in a non-linear way. The story advances in a semi-random way and triggered by users' actions on a 3D wooden maze. You can drop a marble in one of the maze's entrances and the marble can randomly go through different forking paths; the marble's exit point determines and triggers the next video clip.

Bibliographic Management

I use JabRef as my preferred bibliographic management system. It's aimed at BibTeX and it uses it natively (the database(s) is just a regular BibTeX file). JabRef is (being) developed in Java so you can use it in Windows, Linux, Mac OS...

It supports (imports) a lot of bibliographic formats, such as BibTex, RIS, Endnote, just to name a few.

It can fetch citations directly from Citeseer and IEEExplore (and other services, but these are the ones I use most).

Stories In Place - Future Places

“Stories in Place” is about creating a shared, collaborative, situated story. Starting with a small initial phrase, users are asked to contribute their own words in order to complete a story, which is presented in a public screen or projection surface.

Collaboration is simply a matter of sending a text message via bluetooth to a specific device -- StoriesInPlace. Each time a user gives a contribution, the story up to that moment is sent back to his mobile device, so that he automatically holds a copy of his contribution and of those before him.

In the installation at Casa da Música the following people participated:

Álvaro Barbosa - The project's author.

Jorge Cardoso - The guy (me) that implemented it all in Java.

Jorge Abade - The guy that designed those nice looking orange stands for the Mac computers.
